New credit reforms to help struggling consumers

The government's Consumer White Paper 'A Better Deal for Consumers - Delivering Real Help Now and Change for the Future', was published on Thursday, 2nd July 2009, and contains proposals to ban unsolicited credit card cheques and to reform credit- and store card regulations.

The new proposed regulation is aimed at giving consumers more control of their borrowing, and help prevent them accumulating debts that are difficult to pay off.

We have broken down the main points in an easy to read article as well as the Debtwizard comment, all can be found here

If you don't, you'll only receive payments for a limited period after the end of the tax year. You'll also have to pay back these payments.

OFT needs to box clever in Appeal Court

Five Law Lords are currently considering an appeal by the UK's main banks against an earlier decision this year by the Appeal Court that went in favour of the Office of Fair Trading, (OFT).

It is estimated that the banks receive around £2.5bn each year from overdraft charges when someone goes overdrawn without permission or if they have a cheque or direct payment returned unpaid.

We go through the consequences if the banks win or lose the appeal and cover how far back you can claim. More on this article can be found here

Major changes coming in bankruptcy procedure

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of debtor petition bankruptcies and the resulting pressure on court resources has led to significant delays for debtors seeking to access much needed debt relief and delays for other civil court users.

Following a request made by Her Majesty’s Court Service (HMCS), The Insolvency Service (IS) carried out a review to look at the debtor petition bankruptcy process.

It is now looking like to go bankrupt you will no longer need to go to court!

Debtwizard asks the PM for help

Latest - Debtwizard is asking the PM to take decisive action in helping consumers that cannot afford the new bankruptcy fee of £510.
